Madison Highlights: Wisconsin State Capitol

The state capitol of Wisconsin is located on the Isthmus and is the highest point in the City of Madison. Completed in 1917, the capitol is the center of the "Square". A complete renovation of the building was started in 1987 with a completion date set for fall of 2001 at a total cost of $130 million dollars. It is being brought back to the original design with complete upgrading for new technologies. The Capitol grounds is the setting for many events throughout the year, particularly the "Concerts on the Square." Imagine 20,000 people relaxing on blankets, many with a picnic supper, enjoying the music of the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. Some of the other Capitol events are: The Art Fair On The Square, Taste of Madison, Holiday Parade, and, of course, the Dane County Farmer's Market which is held every Saturday on the Square from May through November.
