Madison Highlights: Monona Terrace
|
After many years, the Monona Terrace Convention Center finally came into existence July of 1997, almost sixty years after world-renowned architect and Wisconsin native Frank Lloyd Wright was first approached to design something spectacular for Madison. Wright's style changed many times in his long life. He made eight drawings of the Monona Terrace Convention Center over a period of many years. The eighth drawing is the inspiration for the completed building. Other buildings similar in style would include the Marin County Civic Center in California and the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Milwaukee.
The building rises beside Lake Monona and is located just two blocks from the state capitol. The building can accommodate conventions, weddings, festivals, and individuals strolling or fishing. With the addition of a 237-room hotel and close proximity to the University of Wisconsin and the state government, the Monona Terrace Convention Center has proved an asset to Madison. |
